Modern Cold Storage Construction and Insulation Materials Selection

At present, there are three main forms of cold storage construction:

一, using block with reinforced concrete structure build civil cold storage;

二, light steel structure with assemble cold storage type;

三, civil or steel structure with assemble cold storage type.

1, civil cold storage

In the form of cold storage structure, single-layer cold storage uses beam-plate structure, multi-layer cold storage uses beamless floor structure. The wall, column, floor and other main body use block and reinforced concrete structure, cold storage wall inside insulation layer, insulation layer on both sides need to make moisture-proof vapor layer, the inside should make civil protective layer. The wall insulation material is sprayed by polyurethane.

2, light steel structure with assemble cold storage

With the development of light steel structure and the needs of modern logistics, large column network, large span steel structure assemble cold storage development rapidly. Cold storage load-bearing uses steel columns, steel beams and other light steel structure, insulation uses prefabricated library board. There are two structural forms between light steel and insulation board : one is the outer structure, the other is the internal structure. In order to reduce the radiant heat of the sun, the roof is equipped with corrugated steel plate and hanging about 1.5 meters, and has at least 600mm air layer between insulation layer.

3, civil or steel structure with assemble cold storage

Cold storage structure is civil structure, insulation using pre-refrigeration library. Steel structure is between the civil and light steel structure, it can adapt to large span requirements, the wall is civil, the roof uses steel beams or steel truss structure. Small span and low load usually select steel beams; big span and heavy load selects steel grid structure. Civil or steel-concrete structure with assemble cold storage is between the two types, it avoids the shortcomings of the above two structures and is used widely in these years.

Cold storage design is mainly to prevent the outside heat into the cold storage, in addition to refrigeration system design, the insulation design is cold storage’s life. Heat transfer capacity of cold storage envelope and heat transfer layer is 20% to 35% of the total heat load, so reduce envelope thermal load can achieve energy conservation purpose.

To reduce the unit heat flowing, one is to choose a small thermal conductivity insulation material, the other is to increase the thickness of the insulation layer. And the thickness should not be too thick, otherwise there will increase construction costs and reduce using space. Therefore, it must choose the appropriate thickness material. Insulation material selection should consider its small thermal conductivity, small hygroscopicity and cost. After 1980s, new insulation materials developed rapidly, rock wool, glass wool, polystyrene foam (EPS, XPS),Polyurethane foam are used widely. At present we usually use polystyrene foam, extruded polystyrene foam and polyurethane foam.

Polystyrene foam (EPS)

Polystyrene foam has low thermal conductivity, high water absorption, because of its low price and good thermal insulation performance, it is used widely. Composite sandwich panels made from this material have been widely used in modern cold storage, especially in high temperature refrigerators.

Extruded polystyrene foam (XPS)

Extruded polystyrene has a dense surface layer and closed-cell structure of the inner layer, the thermal conductivity is much lower than the same thickness of polystyrene, with better insulation properties; due to its inner closed-cell structure, its moisture resistance is better , it can maintain a good thermal insulation performance in humid environment. Extruded polystyrene has an unique hard and compact crystal structure, it has high compressive strength, strong resistance to water vapor permeability, stable performance, long using life, therefore, it is considered as the ideal material used on cold storage.

Polyurethane foam (PU)

Polyurethane foam is closed-cell foam material, almost entirely non-connected, at room temperature, the static water absorption is very low. In every insulation materials, it has small thermal conductivity, low water absorption, compression strength and other advantages, and become the first choice for cold storage insulation materials. The disadvantage is the price is high, but after a comprehensive trade-off, its cost is not high. Polyurethane used on cold storage insulation, there are polyurethane field eruption and polyurethane sandwich insulation board. The former uses on-site stratified spraying, insulation effect is good, but it need to make moisture and protective layer. Moisture layer can use a new polymer waterproof coating, protective layer can use civil or metal plate enclosure, the construction period is long and complex. Polyurethane sandwich panel has high strength and compact structure, it doesn’t need to make moisture-proof layer, but it must seal the seams.
